Working with Actors

All thesis productions (except for Acting) must follow the AEA Basic Showcase Code (download it below). The entire company must follow all rehearsal and performance rules (regardless of the Equity status of the actors and stage management team).

The following process should happen before audition calls get sent to our students or are sent to the public via Backstage, social media, etc.

  1. The producer will send the audition call and sides to the project’s Concentration Head, Acting Concentration Heads, and relevant Production Staff for approval. Please give two weeks for the Concentration Heads to review your materials.

    • For 2nd Year Materials, Anne Bogart would approve, for New Plays Festival, David Henry Hwang would approve.

    • For all 2nd Year Productions, Tom Gilmore will approve. For all Thesis productions, Joe Novak or CB Shotwell will approve.

  2. From here, the Concentration Heads/staff can approve the audition call, or if they have any questions or reservations, they will send it to the relevant committee (either Intimacy Committee or EDIA Committee).

  3. Once approved, the producer can email the audition call/sides to the Program Assistant for distribution to the MFA Theatre Community. In this email, the producer should affirm that it has been approved by the Concentration Heads, staff and relevant committees and cc the Concentration Heads/staff on that email.

The maximum cast size for Actors and Directors Theses is 20

Plays that are in rep with each other cannot cast the same actor.

Due to your status as a theses, scheduling auditions does not have to adhere to the Room Reservation Policy. Contact the Assistant Director of Academic Administration directly to schedule your auditions.
