General Operational Policies

In addition to the School’s policies, those listed below are particularly relevant to Theatre students, faculty, and staff. It is important that students are aware of all policies that pertain to being a member of the SoA community.

  1. A Columbia ID is required to enter rehearsal spaces, most of the time. This applies to Schapiro, Riverside Church, Nash, and Watson Hall at all times.
  1. There is absolutely no smoking in any space managed by Columbia University, regardless of the purpose. This includes theatres, lobbies, backstage, rehearsal halls, practice rooms, and classrooms.
  1. The use of candles or any open flame in all buildings is prohibited. This includes cigarette smoke, candles, and matches in any theatre or rehearsal room. There shall be no sparks from lighters, grinders, or other means within classrooms, studios, or theatres. Activation of the sensitive alarm will result in a total evacuation of the building and significant fines for the Program. These fines will be passed on to the those responsible for the infraction.
  1. All persons using rehearsal, performance, and classroom spaces are responsible for the cleanliness and orderliness of those spaces. This includes students, faculty, and staff. Please remove any trash or personal belongings brought into the room and return all furniture to its original position. Turn off all lights when leaving the space and ensure doors are locked and windows closed (if applicable). Report any damages to Theatre Program staff as soon as possible.
  1. Any person not affiliated with Columbia University who is working or volunteering for any Theatre Program event must sign a waiver relevant to their role prior to starting work.  This also applies to actors who are current Columbia students or faculty. See the Production Office for the waiver.
  1. Though there are many security systems in place, Columbia is still a campus in New York City. Students should take every possible precaution to stay safe and keep spaces protected.
  • Ensure all doors are locked and windows closed when leaving a space.
  • Students should carry their CUID at all times.
  • Avoid lowly-populated, low-lit areas late at night.
  • Do not leave your belongings unattended.
  • Report any strange happenings to Campus Security immediately:
