Other Student Resources

The Office of Student and Alumni Affairs provides a wide range of services. In addition to guiding new students through the process of transitioning to the School of the Arts, they plan the School-wide orientation, graduation ceremony, and many events and panels in between. They assist students with registration, billing, and co-curricular requirements and activities. They support student groups and manage student events and activities, and help students navigate many of the central offices across the University, including Columbia Health, Career Services, Housing, Public Safety, University Life, the International Students and Scholars Office, and the Registrar’s Office. The office also helps to uphold many of the School and University-wide policies and manage the School’s disciplinary procedures. Most importantly, the Office of Student Affairs is a place for students who might be struggling and are not sure where to turn. It is the best place to go when students are not sure what to do or whom to ask questions.

The Artists’ Resource Center is an online portal and resource center specifically catered toward SoA student and alumni. Through ARC, students can learn about arts-related grants, scholarships, and other funding opportunities. It also collects information about career, fellowship, and residency opportunities.  Finally, it is a place to go to find support services for professional artists, including legal, union, and grantwriting. Access to the online database (http://www.arc.columbia.edu/) is available with a Columbia UNI and password. To set up an appointment to meet with an ARC Fellow, email the ARC.

Library Resources

Columbia University’s breadth and depth of research materials and resources are extensive, and best of all, completely free for all students to access. These resources are not only beneficial to complete the thesis, but can aid in classroom assignments and extra-curricular projects. The Theatre Program is fortunate to have a liaison at Butler Library. Nancy Friedland is the Librarian for Butler Media, Film Studies & Performing Arts and is eager to help Theatre students take full advantage of Columbia’s library resources. The Department of Public Safety is staffed by approximately 125 full-time security officers and 45 uniformed supervisors licensed by the State of New York. Public Safety Officers are assigned to both fixed and mobile posts. Patrols are conducted in marked and unmarked vehicles, on foot, and on bicycle in the general vicinity of the campuses. Public Safety provides a wide variety of services for the Columbia community, from managing CUIDs and their access to overseeing Columbia’s volunteer ambulance corps to providing walking escorts and shuttle buses for students. Because of Public Safety’s hard work, Columbia was named the “22nd Safest College in America” by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

There are myriad resources on campus – some confidential – to support any student who has suffered any sexual violence. There are also many places to learn more about sexual assault and strategies to prevent sexual assault as a bystander.
